Here is a Wanabee Hang question. There is a sound that I hear from the Hang when it is played fairly rapidly that I can only describe as a Wawawawa sound. Perhaps this is what is meant by overtones? I hear it a lot in Davide Swarup's music and also in the Bells Trailer II.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97IrMi9AZ3c beginning @ :39 seconds on the tone field with his left hand by his knee.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecV3pciKOrc beginning @3:14-3:19 and 3:24-3:29.

Is this what is meant by overtones? Does it only happen on certain notes or does the mic only pick up that part? Are there some scales that this happens more with?

I know that I may never play as well as these examples, but I really like that sound and hope that when I get a Hang, Halo, or Bell that I will be able to duplicate that effect.

What I think of when I think of "that 'wawa' sound" is the quick muting of a tone and re-strike like I hear often in Andi Steil's videos:

or the 'Figurt technique' of using a waving hand to create a vibrato type of sound:

The times you call out are (to my ear) the energy transfer of the fundamental to the overtone in the tone field. To my ear it's a more 'surging' sound. There are more extreme examples of the overtones in the notes being highlighted like in Dante Bucci's Fanfare clip at 44 seconds in:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=UNJswfXKJ3s#t=44s

In that case he's muting the fundamental and extracting the fifth overtone.

For a more 'surging overtone' sound listen to Manu Delago's Adventures from his solo Album "Made in Silence" which I highly recommend:

I think a surging sound is a good description. The Andi Steil vid is not what I am talking about, and It is not a muting effect. I think it may be more of a result of rapid light strikes with a build up of resonance.?

I will check out Manu's album. Thanks for the recommendation. At this point I have over played Swarup and Dante, so it's time to branch out some more. :)
