Dearest Hang Lovers,

Very happy to be part of this community, My name is Joshua Samson, I call my self a first hour Hang player and am extremely grateful to Felix and Sabina for creating the Hang. It has opened a new world to me, being a percussionist my world was around rhythm, beats, grooves, "world" influences, playing Udu, Framedrums, percussion set ups, tuned metal instruments by Pete Engelhart - then there was the Hang and I discovered a world of melody, harmony, scales, chords and it was like a blind person being able to see, now I'm even into an occasional piano, guitar, melodica, concertina playing because of the awareness that the Hang brought me.

Well I'm working on my site http://www.joshuasamson.com and until that's online I'll be to be found on http://www.myspace.com/joshuasamson or http://www.myspace.com/earthchakra. I have a lot of free Hang music online for example at http://www.soundclick.com/musicforhang.

Well be in touch and if you have any Hang questions on playing, recording, feel free to contact me through the forum.

Enjoy and spread the Hang vibrations

Joshua

Hi Joshua,
welcome to the Hang Forum. Nice to have you here. It's interesting to read how the Hang changed your approach to music.

My journey over three years - first with a Low Hang from 2005 and then in addition with a second generation instrument from 2007 - lead me from melody and harmony to sound as the main focus. My second generation refused to be played like a melody instrument. A long time I was at a loss how to treat my second Hang so that we could understand each other. Then when I accepted to let all plans for melody behind me and respect that the Hang wanted to sound, the Hang began to open itself. I found that playing out of the moment with no plans focusing the sound opens a room where sound, melody, harmony and rhythm finds together in acoustic sculpture in time existing for this moment and only for this moment.

Ix
